Dear Green Valley Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers,

Summer brought more than monsoon rains to Green Valley.  I transferred to the position of Green Valley District Commander in June, and have loved every minute that I have been down here.  Let me take a moment to introduce myself.  I am Deanna Coultas. I have been with the Sheriff’s Department since 1996.  Some of you might remember the six months I spent down here as a patrol Sergeant in early 2001 after I was first promoted.  That was a lot of fun, and the experience made the decision easy when I was asked which District I would prefer to be assigned as a Patrol Lieutenant.  I have been a Lieutenant since 2002.  My assignments have included Criminal Investigations, Community Services and, most recently, in the human resources realm as the Staff Services Section Commander.  Although there is a lot to learn as someone who has never been a District Commander, I am excited for the challenge, and enthusiastic to begin working with all of you.

The Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers are an integral part of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.  Enough cannot be said about the support and assistance that all of you provide in many different capacities.  I do not know what the community would do without the Point Control, home checks, fingerprinting services and all of the other activities in which each of you participate.  Even if your interest is in working at the front desk of either the District Substation or the SAV office, you are an integral part of the interaction that this Department has with the community.  Green Valley is a wonderful place to live and work.  Your service to the community makes it so.

There are a couple things that I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of through my assignment down here.  I know you have lost many members over the past year, for one reason or another, and I will do everything I can to support you in your efforts of recruitment and retention.  Additionally, I am eager to work with you in developing a spirit of cooperation and commitment between this District and the rest of the Patrol Division.  Green Valley is a beautiful and unique community, and one that is important to the growth of Pima County and the Sheriff’s Department.  We are all a part of an amazing and progressive organization, and it is to all of our benefit to develop our growth in the direction that best serves the mission and vision of the organization as a whole.  So much can be gained by recognizing that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves.  Although we have a lot of autonomy down here, and we cherish our independent spirit and creative thinking, we are not so alone out here that we cannot benefit from the overall organization and the services, support and ideas that it provides.

As I stated earlier, I am very happy to be working in Green Valley and to have the opportunity to learn from and work with all of you.  It is my hope that we will develop some clear and achievable goals for the future and, working together, we can grow the Green Valley SAV organization in a manner that encourages and fosters future sustainability in the same legacy of service, support and professionalism that each of you and all of the community has come to know.
