Green Valley Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers

Bill Roskey

Green Valley residents continue to be victimized by bogus sweepstakes and similar scams.  This past week, a Green Valley woman received a phone call saying that she had won the Canadian sweepstakes.  In a series of phone calls a few hours apart on the same day, she was told that, in order to claim the prize, she first had to wire various sums of money to individuals in Toronto.  This was supposedly for taxes and delivery charges.  She wired a total of more than $7,000, and the van which was supposed to deliver her prize money that day never materialized.  SAV suggests you be very suspicious of anyone who says he or she is going to send you a large amount of money if you first send them money.  Remember that these con artists are experts who can be extremely convincing.

Green Valley residents continue to be victims of credit card fraud.  And, this past week, a man reported an instance of unauthorized charges on his debit card to SAV.  Remember to safeguard both credit and debit cards and their numbers.  SAV also asks that you remember to lock your homes, cars, trucks, and storage sheds and secure the windows as well.  People are continuing to report the theft of items from both vehicles and buildings that are unsecured.  Locking up only takes a few seconds when you leave, and it can prevent a major loss.

On December 21, 15 residents of Green Valley and 6 residents of Sahuarita completed the Green Valley SAV Academy and have already begun serving their communities by working with sheriff’s deputies and police officers to make the valley a safer place.  Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the next academy should contact SAV at 351-6744 or pick up an application at 601 North La Canada.  Call 648-7746 if you’d like to volunteer to work with the Sahuarita Police Department.
