The purpose of this questionnaire is to allow each applicant to the Training Academy time to acquaint themselves with the "Requirements for S.A.V. Membership" and to answer for him/her self whether or not they feel that they would be both willing and able to make the commitment necessary to attain and maintain membership in the organization.  We recognize that situations change, so this provides only a snapshot of your feelings and desires.

 

Remember, we are all volunteers who are interested in making the S.A.V. a good place to work while helping to keep Green Valley a great place to live.

 

1. The principal work of S.A.V. is patrolling the Green Valley area.  Each scheduled patrol takes at least 6 hours, plus preparations before and follow-ups after patrol.  Are you willing to do this type of volunteering? ______Y?  ______N?

 

2. S.A.V. also performs other tasks such as: administrative desk work in S.A.V. reception and the Sheriff's Office, data input, serve as Bailiff in District Court 7, Mall Patrol, and/or Patrol at the White Elephant.  Are you willing to do this type of volunteering?

3. Do you believe that you are a safe and courteous driver and can follow the rules set forth by the State of Arizona and by the S.A.V.? ____Y?  ______N?

 

4. S.A.V. volunteers are non-commissioned volunteers of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.  As such, they must handle themselves in a professional manner. Do you feel that you would like to work in this type of environment?

5. There is a command structure in the S.A.V. and Sheriff's Departments. Are you willing to take direction from any person including peers and those of the opposite sex?

6. The Training Academy for patrol duties (Track II) requires a commitment of three days per week for 27 days.  There are no make-up classes during the Academy.  Academy Training for Non Patrol duties (Track I) also requires a commitment of three days per week for approximately 52 hours which includes additional training required for these positions.  Are you willing to make this commitment?

8.  The scheduling of patrol work is done on a monthly basis and each person is scheduled approximately two to four times each month. Can you plan your activities to accommodate this kind of scheduling?  Scheduling for other functions in S.A.V. is done within the separate units and determined by need and the individual's availability.

9.  S.A.V. work is considered to be a primary commitment for one's volunteer work. Do you feel that you will make this your volunteering priority?

Each volunteer must be in good physical and mental health and have no known disabilities that might place the volunteer, co-worker or public in a hazardous and/or unsafe condition.  Do you have any physical condition(s), which could compromise your safety or limit your ability to perform required duties? ____Y? _____N?

14.  Report writing is a necessary part of SAV work.  Therefore, S.A.V. personnel have to be able to communicate through writing reports and filling in forms.  Do you believe that you have reasonably good writing skills? _____Y? _____N?

 

15. Are you physically able to drive a patrol car and get in and out many times to perform checks on residences in a single six hour patrol period? _____Y? _____N?

 

16. Communicating by radio is a skill that you must learn.  This includes learning and using police codes and jargon.  Do you have reasonably good learning and retention skills?

17. S.A.V. work includes checking residences for people who are away and interviewing victims of crime.  Therefore it is necessary that volunteers be able to read maps, locate homes and businesses, and read street signs from the patrol car.  Can you find given locations using maps and street signs? _____Y? _____N?

18.  Traffic control is another part of S.A.V. volunteer work.  It is possible that you might be called upon to perform this activity in the rain or under the hot summer sun for several hours at a time.  Do you believe that you are physically able to perform under these conditions?

19. Pima County Sheriff department requires each perspective member of S.A.V. to fill out a questionnaire regarding your driving history and personal background and be fingerprinted prior to start of the Academy.  Do you believe that there is anything in your past that would preclude your passing a background check of this nature?
